Power Failure, Yes or No

Here's how to know whether the power outage when you were gone was momentary or a longer-lasting shutdown that could have spoiled food in your freezer. Before you leave for your trip put a bag of ice cubes in the freezer. When you return, if the cubes have kept their shape, you'll know your food is safe to eat. But if the ice has melted and frozen into one big lump, you'll know the the outage was long enough to spoil your frozen foods. Discard them and don't take a chance of illness.
